Short answer
A blank thermostat usually means lost 24-volt control power: dead batteries, a blown low-voltage fuse on the control board, a tripped condensate float switch, or a wiring fault. A thermostat that displays fine but never satisfies is more often reporting a system problem than causing one.

What a thermostat does and does not control
A conventional residential thermostat is a low-voltage switch with a temperature sensor. It closes circuits — typically R to Y for cooling, R to G for the fan — using 24 volts supplied by a transformer in the air handler. It does not generate cooling, control refrigerant, or regulate capacity on most single-stage systems.

Blank thermostat: the diagnostic order
- Batteries. On battery-powered models, replace them first. A weak battery set produces intermittent behavior before it produces a blank screen.
- Breakers. Confirm the air handler breaker is on. The control transformer lives in the indoor unit, so losing power there kills the thermostat even though the outdoor unit has power.
- Float switch. A tripped condensate safety switch interrupts the control circuit by design. If the thermostat went dark and there is water near the air handler, start with AC leaking water.
- Low-voltage fuse. Control boards use a small automotive-style fuse, typically 3 or 5 amps. A blown one points to a short in the low-voltage wiring, which needs to be found rather than just fused again.
- Wiring. Rodent damage, staples through wire, corroded terminals and loose screws all interrupt the circuit.
Steps one and two are homeowner-safe. Beyond that, work happens inside the equipment and belongs to a technician.
When the reading itself is wrong
A thermostat reports the temperature at its own location, which is not always representative of the home. Placement problems are common and easy to mistake for a defective device.
