Why 'it just needs a charge' is an incomplete answer

- In a system that was correctly charged at installation, yes. Refrigerant is not consumed by operation. The only other explanations are an undercharge at installation or refrigerant lost during a previous repair — both of which still mean the system needs measurement rather than a routine top-off.
- Can you just add refrigerant to get me through the summer?
- It is sometimes done as a stopgap, but understand what you are buying: temporary cooling, no repair, and continued compressor stress. Ask what the loss rate suggests, what the repair would involve, and whether the refrigerant cost alone makes the repair the better decision now.
- How long does refrigerant leak detection take?
